90년대 얼터너티브록씬의 아이콘으로 사랑받은 시카고 출신의 록밴드 스매싱 펌킨스의 놀라운 데뷔 앨범 Gish (1991)

스매싱 펌킨스의 데뷔 앨범 Gish는 펄잼과 너바나가 메인스트림을 장악하기 직전인 1991년 5월에 발표되었다. 당시 마이너인 Caroline에서 제작, 발매되었음에도 불구하고 상당한 완성도를 인정받으며 일찌기 마니아층을 형성해갔으며 명반인 2,3집과 우열을 가리기 어려운 명반으로 사랑받고 있다. 싱글로 발표된 "Siva", "I Am One", "Rhinoceros" 은 90년대 얼터너티브록의 명곡으로 손꼽히며 그외에도 전곡이 우수한 완성도를 갖고 있다. 밴드는 신인임에도 불구하고 하나의 앨범에서 하드록적인 요소부터 슈게이징/드림팝, 싸이키델릭적인 면까지 훌륭하게 소화해내고 있다. 특히 메인 송라이터이자 기타/보컬을 담당하고 있는 리더 빌리 코건의 재능은 이미 주목할 만한 수준이었으며, 그를 중심으로 밴드 전 멤버들의 탄탄한 실력과 개성은 밴드의 성공에 큰 밑바탕이 되었다. 또한 그해 가을 발표될 너바나의 Nevermind를 제작하기도한 명프로듀서이자 록밴드 Garbage의 리더인 부치 빅과의 호흡도 뛰어나 그와는 메이저 데뷔 앨범인 Siamese Dream까지 함께 했다.
