영국에서 온 리버틴스의 놀라운 정규 데뷔 앨범, Up The Bracket!

2002년, 전설적인 펑크 밴드 The Clash의 믹 존스와 스웨이드의 기타리스트 버나드 버틀러가 프로듀싱한 데뷔 싱글 What a waster로 신인으로 UK 차트 Top 40 오르며 이름을 알리기 시작한 The Libertines는 NME로부터 그해 최고의 신인 밴드로 선정되었다. 이후 이들은 다음 싱글 I Get Along 역시 좋은 반응을 얻으며 차트에서 순항을 해나아갔고, 2003년에는 싱글 Time For Heroes로 미국시장에도 노크를 했다.
칼 버렛, 피트 도어티, 존 헤설, 게리 파월로 구성된 Libertines의 음악는 소위 개러지록 사운드로, 사실 내용으로 보자면 다소 과격한 면을 갖고 있지만, 사운드 자체는 로큰롤, 모드, 펑크와 브릿팝 등이 적절히 혼합되어 심플하면서도 훅을 갖고 있다. 그렇기 때문이 그들의 음악이 영국과 유럽은 물론 일본, 미국, 국내에 이르기까지 대중과 평론가들 양측에서 폭발적인 찬사를 받는데 성공하지 않았을까 싶다.
