큐어(The Cure)의 두번째 정규 앨범 Seventeen Seconds (1980년 作)

완벽하지는 않지만 로버트 스미스의 천재성을 충분히 엿볼 수 있는 놀라운 데뷔 앨범 Three Imaginary Boys (1979) 이후 약 1년여만인 1980년 4월에 발표된 2집 앨범이다. 큐어의 초기 사운드를 대표하는 그 유명한 "A Forest"가 수록된 앨범으로 팬들 사이에서는 그들의 초기 카다로그 중 필청 앨범으로 손꼽힌다. Michael Dempsey기 탈퇴하고 이후 밴드의 핵심이라 할 수 있는 베이시스트 Simon Gallup이 참여한 첫 앨범이기도 하며, 기존 3인조에서 키보디스트인 Matthieu Hartley가 가입해 4인조로 확장되는 등 밴드 구성에 있어서도 안정화되며 클래식 라인업의 시작점으로 볼 수 있는 등 여러가지로 의미가 있는 작품이다.
한편 오리지널 앨범 발매 수십여년만에 중고로도 구하기 어려웠던 큐어의 앨범들이 순차적으로 리마스터 재발매되고 있다. 오리지널 앨범에서도 프로듀싱의 담당했던 완벽주의자 로버트 스미스가 이번 작업에서 직접 모든 리마스터 과정에 관여를 하고 있다는 점은 안심을 할 수 있게 해준다. 특히 1980년 전후에 발매된 초기 작품들의 경우 제작비도 적고 레코딩된 지가 꽤 오래되서 음질이 다소 아쉬웠던 점이 있었기 때문에 깨끗하게 업그레이드 된 음질은 반가울 수 밖에 없으며, 더욱 관한 풍부한 자료로 업그레이드된 부클릿 또한 올드팬과 뉴비팬들 모두에게 좋은 자료가 될 수 있다는 점에서 소장 가치 이상의 의미가 있다.
