90년대 이후 스래시 메틀의 자존심, 테스타먼트의 걸작으로 그들 최고의 앨범 중 하나이자 90년대 후반 최고의 스래시 메틀 앨범으로 손꼽힌다. 라인업은 그야말로 최강인데, 척 프론트맨 척 빌리(Chuck Billy)를 비롯해 제임스 머피(James Murphy)/에릭 피터슨(Eric Peterson)의 막강 트윈 기타시스템에, Death 출신의 Steave Digiorgio, 슬레이어의 드러밍 머쉰 Dave Lombardo까지(!) 참여하고 있다. 라인업의 화려함에 잔뜩 기대를 했다가 실망하는 경우도 종종 있지만, The Gathering은 그에 해당하지 않음을 알 수 있을 것이다. 특히 데이브 롬바르도의 드러밍은 슬레이어의 전성기 시절 이상의 기량을 갖고 있으며, 2명의 실력파 기타리스트는 경쟁보다는 조화를 선택한 듯 한쪽으로 무게가 기울지 않고 있다. 이로인해 당시 거물급 밴드들의 변절과 방황에 실망하던 정통 스래시 메틀 팬들에게 유일하게 남은 테스타먼트와 이 앨범은 그야말로 자존심이자 희망이 될 수 밖에 없었다. 싱글로 발표된 D.N.R.을 비롯해 앨범 전체가 타이트함과 파워를 유지하고 있다. 현재까지도 스테디 셀러로 판매되고 있는 스래시 메틀 앨범의 명반이다.
