브리티쉬 모던록의 전설 더 버브의 리더, 리처드 애쉬크로프트의 최신 정규 앨범 Natural Rebel (2018)

1990년대 브릿팝씬의 황금기를 이끌며 더 버브(The Verve)에서 당대 최고의 프론티어맨 중 한명이자 싱어송라이터로 활약하고 2000년대 이후 솔로로 전향한 리처드 애쉬크로포트가 "These People" 이후 2년여만에 신보 "Natural Rebel"을 발표했다. 우선 솔로 통산 5집인 이번 앨범에서 가장 두드러지는 점은 아무래도 The Verve 시절 "Urban Hymns" (1997)의 프로듀서로 시작해 2000년 솔로 데뷔작 "Alone with Everybody" 이후 최근 작품에 이르기까지 20여년간 모든 정규 앨범에서 함께 해 온 프로듀서 크리스 포터(Chris Potter)가 아닌, 새로운 인물 존 켈리(Jon Kelly)가 메인 프로듀서로 기용된 사실이다. 그는 70년대초부터 엔지니어로 시작해 케이트 부쉬의 전담 프로듀서로 유명하며, 그 밖에도 폴 매카트니, 더 댐드(The Damned), 뷰티풀 사우스 등 주로 레전드급 영국 뮤지션들과 함께 작업한 풍부한 경험의 베테랑이다. 오랜 파트너십도 중요하지만, 이러한 변화는 그가 음악적 변화가 필요했음을 느꼈다고 보인다. 리차드 애쉬크로프트나 버브의 팬이라면 이러한 시도가 과연 어떤 변화를 가져왔는지 귀기울여 비교해 보는 것도 좋을 듯하다.
한편, 앨범 발매 한달여를 앞둔 9월 10일 "Surprised by the Joy"가 첫 싱글로 선정되었으며, 뒤이어 "Born to Be Strangers", "That's When I Feel It" 등도 싱글로 커트되었다. 앨범은 영국에서 차트 4위(인디 앨범차트 1위)에 올랐다.
