90년대 이후 현재까지 프로그레시브 데스 메틀계의 독보적인 존재로 군림하며 국내외에도 많은 골수팬들을 보유하고 있는 Opeth의 여덟번째 정규 앨범, Ghost Reveries. Opeth는 탄탄한 사운드에 컨셉 앨범을 통한 완벽한 형식미를 창조해내며 내놓는 앨범마다 평단과 팬들 모두로부터 놀라움과 극찬을 쏟아내게 만들어 왔다. 이번 앨범은 이들이 새로 보금자리를 튼 헤비메틀 전문 레이블인 로드러너에서 발매한 첫 작품으로 미국 앨범 차트 64위까지 오르는 이쪽 장르에서는 보기 드문 성적을 거두었다. 앨범은 어머니를 죽인 한 남자의 파란만장한 이야기를 엮은 컨셉 앨범으로 의도되어 제작되었으며 완성도에 있어서도 "역시 Opeth"라는 소리가 나올만 하게 잘 구성되어 있다. 역시나 10분이 넘는 대곡이 절반이나 되는 4곡이나 수록되어 있으며 (러닝 타임이 4분이 조금 안되어 비교적 이들의 곡 가운데에서는 짧은 편인) Isolation Years를 제외한 그외의 짧지 않은 곡들 역시 앨범의 플롯을 유기적으로 결합하는데 부족함이 없다. 참고로 마지막곡 Isolation Years의 경우는 유일하게 앨범의 흐름과는 무관한 곡으로 Mikael Åkerfeldt이 강력하게 요청하며 전체적인 흐름을 깨지 않도록 맨 마지막 트랙으로 수록되었다고 한다. The Grand Conjuration은 싱글로 발매되어 뮤직비디오가 만들어지기도 했는데 10분이 넘는 길이 때문에 원래 앨범 버젼에서 절반 가량이 편집되었다.

※ 2005년작 CD/DVD 디지팩 스페셜 에디션 : DEEP PURPLE의 ‘SOLDIER OF FORTUNE’ 커버곡 추가 수록. 보너스 DVD에는 앨범 제작에 관련된 40분 분량의 다큐멘터리, ‘GRAND CONJURATION’ 프로모션 뮤직비디오, 보너스 트랙을 제외한 전수록곡의 5.1채널 MIX VERSION 수록.
