호주 록밴드 미드나잇오일의 전성기 대표작 Blue Sky Mining (1990)

앞서간 사운드와 사회적 메시지를 담은 가사로 흔히 호주의 U2로 불리우는 미드나잇 오일은 일찌기 1978년 셀프 타이틀 데뷔 앨범을 발매한 호주 출신의 관록의 록 밴드다. 그들이 전세계적으로 알려진 것은 헤비 메틀의 전성기 시대에 U2나 REM과 같은 실험적이고 모던한 록 사운드와 정치적 메시지에 있었다. 하지만 이들은 U2나 펑크 밴드들과 달리 주로 당시로서는 다소 낫선 - 그리고 진적인 - 바로 환경에 관한 메시지를 전달했다. 익히 알려졌듯이 이들은 다국적 거대 오일기업인 엑손사의 알래스카 사고 등과 관련해 회사 앞에서 공연을 하는 등의 남들보다 한 바자국 앞선 의식있는 행동을 하였다. 하지만 뮤지션에게는 음악이 바로 생명이다. 1990년에 발표된 본 앨범은 미드 나잇 오일이 발표한 많은 뛰어난 앨범들 중에서도 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (1982), Red Sails in the Sunset (1984), Diesel and Dust (1987), Earth and Sun and Moon(1993) 등과 함께 음악적, 대중성 양쪽에 있어서 대표반이자 80년대 드문 모던록 걸작의하나로서, 그들만의 스트레이트한 모던록 사운드에 강렬한 메시지를 전달하고 있다. 앨범은 본국인 호주 앨범 차트 1위를 비롯해, 미국에서 앨범차트 20위, 유럽, 영국에서도 좋은 반응을 얻었으며 타이틀곡 Blue Sky Mine(US 모던록차트 1위)를 비롯해 Forgotten Years (US 모던록차트 1위), River Runs Red, One Country등 여러곡들이 싱글로 커트되며 이들의 커리어에서 절정기를 이어갔다.
