Dorothy is a 24-year-old kindergarten teacher from Harlem, who along with her dog Toto are lost in a snowstorm on the night of Thanksgiving and end up in the Land of Oz, which looks like a strangly surreal verison of New York City. Dorothy learns the only way she can get home is to ease on down the road to see the Wiz. Along the way she meets a scarecrow made of garbage who wants a brain. A Tin Man, who is a turn-of-the-century mechanical carnie from Coney Island who wants a heart. And a lion who was banished from the jungle and must make his living as a statue in front of the main research branch of the New York Public Library.

동명의 브로드웨이 뮤지컬을 원작으로 1978년에 제작된 모타운 버젼의 오즈의 마법사 'The Wiz'. 영화는 시드니 루멧이 감독, 조엘 슈마허가 각본을, 음악은 퀸시 존스 등 초호화 제작진들이 참여해 공동으로 담당했다. 무엇보다 당시 20세였던 젊은 시절 마이클 잭슨을 비롯 다이아나 로스, 루더 밴더로스, 로버타 플랙 등 전설적인 R&B 스타들이 총출동한다는 점에서 뜻깊은 작품이다.
