어느덧 정식 데뷔 20년을 맞이한 있는 웨일즈 출신의 베테랑 록밴드 Manic Street Preachers의 2009년 통산 9번째 정규 앨범 Journal for Plague Lovers!

데뷔초 하드록, 펑크의 영향을 받은 강렬한 로큰롤부터 90년대 후반 Everthing Must Go 이후 팝적 센스를 보여준 다양한 사운드를 들려주었던 매닉스. 그들의 이번 앨범 Journal for Plague Lovers는 명반 The Holy Bible (1994년, 3집) 시절의 강렬함을 되살리면서도 세월의 원숙함이 녹아든 연주가 일품으로 평가받고 있다.
20여년간 여러 명반을 포함해 항상 일정 수준 이상의 좋은 앨범을 발표했던 그들이지만, 이번 앨범에 대해서는 올드팬들과 새로운 팬, 그리고 평단까지 만족시킬 정도로 극찬을 받고 있다. 이들의 정점이었던 The Holy Bible의 감성을 현시점에 맞게 재탄생시킨 앨범이라고 봐도 될듯하다. 특히 이번 앨범 수록곡의 모든 가사에는 1995년 갑자기 실종되어버린 오리지널 멤버 리치 에드워즈가 생전에 남겼던 글들이 사용되어 화제가 됐다. 또한 리치가 참여했던 마지막 앨범이자, 매닉스의 최고 명반 중 하나인 The Holy Bible의 커버를 담당했던 Jenny Saville가 15년만에 참여해, 다시금 멋진 아트워크를 제공해주었다. 프로듀싱에도 픽시스, 너바나 등의 명반을 제작했던 얼터너티브록의 거물급 포로듀서인 스티브 알바니가 참여해 완성도를 높이고 있다.
