시대와 장르를 넘나드는 음악적 자유주의자 레니 크라비츠의 명반, Mama Said (1991)

이제는 베스트 앨범도 내놓은 중견 뮤지션이 된 레니 크라비츠. Let Love Rule (1989)으로 데뷔한 이래 20여년간 그는 레트로 뮤직의 제왕으로 군림하며 독보적인 위치에 올라있다. 80년대 이후부터는 프린스 정도를 제외하고는 찾아보기 어려운 R&B와 락앤롤이라는 현실적으로 교집합의 부분이 상당히 적었던 그 두 장르의 접점에서, 60-70년대의 복고적인 느낌에 모던한 감각을 동시에 갖고 그만큼 능수능란하게 들려준 뮤지션은 일찌기 없었기 때문이다.
그의 2번째 정규 앨범인 Mama said는 레니 크라비츠가 가장 창작력과 대중성의 균형에 있어 완벽했다고 평가받은 작품 중 하나이자, 소위 그를 90년대 레트로 뮤직의 대표주자로서 인정하게 만든 작품이다. 본 앨범은 R&B 성향이 짙었던 전작 Let Love Rule과 후속작 Are you gonna my way의 록적인 성향 사이에서 연결 고리 역할을 하고 있다. 또한 그의 앨범 중 최초로 앨범 차트 Top 40 (39위)에 오르는 성공을 거두고 Always On The Run, It ain't over till it's over, Stand By My Woman 등 여러 싱글 히트곡을 만들어내며 현재까지 미국에서만 약 2백만장의 판매고를 기록한 최초의 상업적 성공작이다. 한편 본 앨범에는 Guns N' Roses의 기타리스트이자 그의 고교 동창이기도 한 Slash가 참여(2곡)하여 화제가 되기도 했다. Slash는 레니의 대표곡 Always on the run에서 공동작곡을 하며 육감적인 블루지 리프를 제공하고, 레니는 자신의 특기인 칼끔한 커팅으로 트윈 기타 연주를 들려주었다. 또한 Fields Of Joy에서도 Slash는 기타 솔로를 연주해줬으며 저명한 클래식 뮤지션인 마이클 케이먼이 작곡에 참여했다. 그리고 All I Ever Wanted는 레니가 존경하는 인물인 존 레넌의 아들 션 레넌과 함께 작곡한 곡이다.
