돌아온 브릿팝의 전설 The Verve의 통산 4집이자, 11년만의 신작 Forth (2008년 作)

10여년전 걸작 The Urban Hymns(1997)를 발표하고 정상에서 해체를 선언해 팬들에게 아쉬움을 안겨줬던 브리티쉬 모던록밴드 The Verve. 리처드 애쉬크로포트를 비롯해 어린 나이에 대학 동기 출신들로 구성된 멤버 모두가 출중한 실력을 갖고 있었고, 실제로 앨범을 낼수록 한층더 발전해온 터라 이들의 발전 가능성은 동시대 최고라고 봐도 과언이 아니었다. 이후 솔로 활동을 하면 나름대로 의미있는 작품도 남겼지만, 역시나 작년에 극적으로 재결성해 11년만에 발표하는 이번 신작, Forth에서 보여준 멤버들의 조화는 10여년의 공백이 무색할만큼 뛰어나다. 이번 앨범은 단순한 브릿팝의 회기라기보다는 밴드의 과거와 현재, 미래가 모두 담긴 작품이라고 평가된다. 이들은 히트싱글을 다수 배출했던 Urban Hymns의 영향으로 보통 브릿팝 밴드로 분류되긴하지만, 팝적인 면보다는 슈게이징과 사이키델릭 등이 주도하는 실험적인 면모가 강한 편이었다. 신보에서 첫 싱글로 커트되어 좋은 반응을 얻고 있는 Love Is Noise는 밴드의 그러한 음악적 근원이 2008년이라는 현재에 적용되어 어떻게 재탄생하는지와 이들이 앞으로 어떻게 나아갈지를 잘 보여준다.
