Northern Soul은 브릿팝 밴드 The Verve가 1995년 여름 발표한 두번째 정규 앨범으로 3집 Urban Hymns와 함께 그들 최고의 음반이자, 풍성한 사운드와 깊이있는 가사로 서정성의 극치를 이루며 90년대 후반 브릿팝의 또다른 대안을 제시한 명반으로 손꼽힌다. 전체적으로 시기상으로나 스타일 상으로나 슈게이징과 싸이키델릭한 면이 강했던 실험적인 1집과 대중성이 강화된 3집의 중간적인면이 강하다고 볼 수 있다. 앨범에는 이들의 대표곡 중 하나인 명곡 History를 비롯해 어쿠스틱한 사운드에 우울한 감성이 앞권인 On Your Own과 This Is Music 등 대표적인 싱글 히트곡들 외에도 완성도 높은 곡들이 풍부하다. 대중적인 트랙들은 3집이 좀더 많을 수 있겠지만, 전체적인 완성도 면에서는 전혀 떨어지지 않는 작품으로 두고두고 들을만한 음반이다. 앨범의 프로듀싱은 같은 해 발표된 명반 Morning Glory를 제작했던 Owen Morris가 담당해 걸작을 만들어냈다. 1990년대 중반 절정기에 달했던 찬란했던 영국 모던록씬이 낳은 또 하나의 보석으로, 모던록 팬이라면 반드시 들어봐야할 앨범이다.
