그루브 메틀씬을 대표하는 밴드 머신 헤드의 세번째 정규 앨범 The Burning Red (1999년 作)

본 앨범 The Burning Red는 1999년에 발표된 이들의 세번째 앨범으로 Korn, Soulfly, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit 등 쟁쟁한 밴드들의 데뷔 명반을 제작했던 프로듀서인 Ross Robinson과 손잡고 제작, 화제가 되었다. 특히 본 앨범은 1,2집에서 들려주었던 Machine Head의 사운드가 80년대 출신의 선배 스래시 메틀 밴드들과 비교해 비교적 새로운 스타일이지만 그래도 정통 메틀의 형태를 유지했던 이전의 작품들에서 메틀코어적인 변화를 준 첫 작품이다. 당시 90년대말은 이전의 하이브리드/얼터너티브 메틀로 불리기도 했던 Korn, Limp Bizkit 등 소위 하드코어, 핌프록의 인기가 절정을 지나고 있었으며, 그대신 정통 메틀팬들에게는 좀더 파워와 스피드 등 메틀적인 이미지를 강화한 강력한 사운드의 Slipknot, Soulfly 등이 화려하게 등장, 크게 어필하며 하나의 거대한 조류로 성장한 시기였다. Machine Head 3집의 사운드는 바로 그러한 영향을 수용했으며, Ross Robinson이라는 당시 가장 주목받던 실력파 프로듀서를 영입했다. 결과적으로 본 앨범은 현재까지 데뷔 앨범과 함께 이들의 역대 앨범 중 가장 높은 판매고를 올렸으며, 음악적 변화에 대한 다소의 논란은 있었지면 대체적으로 퀄리티 자체에는 비교적 높은 평가를 받았다.
