헤비메틀의 살아있는 신화 주다스 프리스트의 화려한 복귀작『Angel Of Retribution』

새 앨범『Angel Of Retribution』은 주다스 프리스트에 근접한 사운드를 낸다. 본질에서 멀어지기보다는 『British Steel』과 『Screaming for Vengeance』의 사운드에 충실한 헤비메틀 앨범이라고 할 수 있다. 서서히 죄어오는 긴장감 넘치는 인트로, 절규하는 엄청난 음역의 롭 헬포드, 『Painkiller』시절 만큼이나 이 앨범에서 가장 헤비한 트랙 Judas Rising 으로 시작한다. 첫곡부터 주다스 프리스트는 팬들이 원하는 음악을 들려준다. 가장 주다스 프리스트다운 곡이다.
Deal With The Devil 은 1980년대 중반의 전형적인 특징을 간직한 곡이며, 트윈 기타워크와 더불어 경쾌한 질주감을 잘 살리고 있다.Revolution 은 이언 힐의 헤비한 베이스 인트로와 킹 다이아몬드를 방불케 하는 롭의 고음이 어우러진다. 다소 로맨틱한 분위기를 풍기는 Worth Fighting For 는 미드템포의 단순한 전개로 이루어져있지만, AC/DC 같은 그루브를 느낄 수 있다.Demonizer 는 다시 『Painkiller』로의 복귀를 선언하는 듯한 강력한 헤비메틀연주를 들려준다. 스콧 트레비스의 막강한 더블베이스 드러밍과 역동적으로 변화하는 가운데, 중반부의 테크니컬한 기타솔로도 감상포인트이다.
밴드 헬포드에서의 발라드 트랙들을 떠올리게 하는 Angel 은 멜로디와 감수성이 잘살아있다. 좋은 느낌의 곡으로 앨범의 감초 같은 역할을 한다. 날카로운 칼날을 타고 가는 듯한 느낌과 장엄한 분위기를 모두 들려주는 Hellrider 도 맹렬함을 드러내고 있다. 2분 52초의 어두운 장송곡과 같은-Eulogy-는 다음트랙의 접속곡과 같은 역할을 한다. 끝으로 13분에 이르는 Lochness 는 좀처럼 접할 수 없는 대곡이다. 이곡은 마치 『Sad Wings of Destiny』시절과 같은 한편의 서사시적인 구성력을 갖추고 있다. 완벽한 복귀의 결정타를 날리는 멋진 트랙이다.
