90년대 초반에 발표한 Check Your Head에서 비스티 보이스는 이미 장르의간격을 뛰어넘으려는 시도를 보여준 바 있다. 일반적인 힙합팀이 보녀주던 구성을넘어서서 그들이 직접 악기를 연주하기 시작했고, 사운드적인 측면에서도 기존 힙합 앨범과 차별을 가지기 시작했다.
물론 그들이 백인이기 때문에 힙합 비트를 차용한 백인 하드코어일 뿐이라고 생각할 지도 모른다. 그러나 Paul′s Boutique에서 이제는너무 유명해진 프로듀서 팀 더스트 브러더스를 선택하고, 4번째 비정규 멤버인 키보디스트 머니 마크가 가세하면서, 그들은 하드 코어와 힙합만이 아니라고 재즈와 레게, 훵크에 이르는 다양한 음악적 성향을 보여주기 시작했다. 말 그대로 좀더 그럴 듯 해졌다고나 할까- 94년도에 발매한 Ill Communication은 전작의 성향을 한층 더 끌어올린 역작으로, 그들 나름대로 정리한 하드코어 Sabotage, 복고적인 색채가 강한 훵크 넘버 Root Down, 그리고 소울 재즈 훵크 레게를 넘나드는 인스트루멘틀 연주곡들까지 장르를 뛰어넘는 독특한 사운드로 마침내 성숙한 비스티 보이스의 모든 것을 보여주는 듯하다.
