The Dark Side Of The Moon으로 프로그레시브록계를 평정한 핑크 플로이드의 연이은 역작 Wish You Were Here (1975년 作)

밴드가 THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON을 통해 시드의 환영에서 벗어날 수 있었다고는 해도 여전히 그들의 의식 깊은 곳에서는 시드가 살아 숨쉬고 있었다. 적어도 ‘핑크 플로이드’라는 이름이 남아 있는 한 시드 배릿은 사라질 수 없고 잊혀질 수 없는 존재였다. 결국 로저를 비롯한 멤버들의 시드를 향한 그리움은 음악으로 형상화되기에 이른다. 그리고 이들 최대의 명곡으로 불리기에 부족함이 없는 9부작 Shine on you crazy diamond가 만들어진다. 하지만 ‘그대가 여기에 있다면’이라는 애절한 타이틀의 이 앨범이 탄생하게 된 것은 단순히 시드 때문만은 아니었다. 이미 그때에는 밴드 내부로부터 싹트기 시작한 갈등이 표면화되어 나타나고 있었다. 로저는 밴드의 내부적인 불안 요인에 대해 말했지만 앨범의 사운드 자체는 그 어느 때보다도 높은 완성도를 지니고 있었다. 불타고 있는 자신과 악수를 나누는 사람, 그 존재는 있으나 형체는 이미 사라져 버려 투명인간처럼 보이는 사람 등 극도의 허무감을 동반하는 커버의 이미지처럼 이들이 음악으로 나타내고자한 것은 자신들의 마음 깊은 곳으로부터 솟아나는 허무함이었을 것이다. 이제 밴드는 완전히 새로운 국면으로 접어들었다. 데이빗의 원숙한 기타 연주가 그 어느 때보다도 듣는 이의 가슴을 파고 드는 Shine on you crazy diamond와 언제 들어도 짙은 감동을 주는 Wish you were here는 단숨에 팬들을 사로잡았다. 레코드 산업이 주는 압박을 노래한 Welcome to the machine과 밴드가 늘상 존경을 표시하던 브리티시 록계의 거장 로이 하퍼(Roy Harper)의 보컬이 빛을 발하는 Have a cigar 역시 명곡으로 꼽힌다. / gmv 1999년 07월 김경진
