스래시 메틀의 제왕, 메탈리카가 자신들의 스타일과 사운드를 정립시킨 두번째 정규 앨범 Ride The Lightning (1984년 作)
하늘을 날고 있는 전기 의자를 그린 커버 아트워크에서 예상할 수 있듯이 타이틀곡 Ride The Lightning은 사형에 관한 주제를 다루고 있다. 흥미로운 점은 메인 리프와 전개를 들어보면 원래 메탈리카의 기타리스트였던 메가데스의 데이브 머스테인의 특유의 스타일을 쉽게 눈치챌 수 있다는 사실이다. (데뷔 앨범에 이어 이 앨범까지는 몇몇 곡에서 크레딧에 등장하며 그의 자취가 분명히 느껴진다) 타이틀 곡 역시 멋지지만 역시 본 앨범의 메인코스는 For Whom The Bell Tolls과 Creeping Death, 그리고 최초의 슬로우 넘버 Fade To Black이다. 세곡은 라이브에서 MOP과 Enter Sandman, One 등과 함께 하이라이트 중 하나로 절대 빠지지 않는 곡이다. 특히 Creeping Death는 커크와 제임스가 만들어내는 스피디한 스래시 리프와 슬로우하지만 헤비한 하이라이트가 만들어내는 극적인 곡의 전개, (라이브에서 관객과 함께) Die를 외쳐대는 제임스의 보컬로 라이브에서는 Master Of Puppets에 버금가는 압도적인 분위기를 만든다. 이런 곡들을 들으면 그 이전 누구도 해내지 못한 과연 "메탈리카만이 할 수 있는"곡이란 걸 느끼게해준다. 가사는 앞서 말했듯이 직접적이거나 노골적이지는 않지만 대부분의 수록곡들이 자살, 사형, 전쟁 등 유독 죽음과 관련된 소재들을 다루고 있다. 한편 사운드는 1집 Kill′em All 이후 1년여 만에 발표되었지만 거친 사운드로 일관하며 언더그라운드적인 냄새가 물씬 풍기는 데뷔 앨범에 비해서 프로페셔널해진 면이 많이 있어 일취월장했음을 느낄 수 있다. 또한 이후의 Master나 Justice 앨범에서 나올 대곡 중심의 성향도 서서히 드러난다. 하지만 전체적으로는 앞서 언급한 곡들 외에도 곡들 자체가 대부분 우수하며 감성적인 면에서도 1,3집의 중간적인 느낌이 있어 많은 올드팬들에게는 그들의 대표반 중 하나로 Master 앨범에 버금가는 인기를 누리고 있다.
