Mansun의 놀라운 데뷔 앨범 Attack Of The Grey Lantern (1997)
미리 발표된 몇장의 EP에서 보여준 독특한 음악으로 높은 가능성과 함께 일찌감치 골수팬들을 만들어낸 그들의 최초의 정규 앨범으로 영국에서만큼이나 그들의 진가를 알아본 1997년 2월 초 일본에서 먼저 발표되었다. 수록곡들은 Wide Open Space나 Stripper Vicar 같은 빅히트곡에 우선 주목이 되겠지만, 그외에도 Taxloss, Egg Shaped Fred, She Makes My Nose Bleed 등의 EP를 비롯 전곡이 평균 수준 이상의 곡이라고해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 뛰어난 90년대 말 영국 록씬을 대표할 만한 걸작 앨범이다. 로큰롤과 댄서블한 리듬이 결합되어 만들어내는 뛰어난 강약 조절과 멜로디 라인, 멜랑콜리한 분위기와 전체적인 흐름, 그리고 2대의 기타가 만들어내는 강렬함까지 데뷔 앨범으로는 드문 최고의 퀄리티를 유지하고 있다. 특히 보컬과 기타, 그리고 대부분의 송라이팅을 맡고 있는 프론트맨 폴 드래이퍼에 대해 주목할만한데, 그의 연약한듯하면서도 시니컬한 비음의 보이스는 묘한 분위기를 만들어며, 자신이 쓴 흥미로운 가사(앨범은 가벼운 컨셉 형식이다)는 앨범의 수준을 업그레이드해 동시대 비슷비슷했던 브릿팝 밴드들 사이에서 더욱 돋보이게 만들었다.

This 21st anniversary edition of Attack of the Grey Lantern is a special limited edition set with 3 CDs and a DVD in a 72-page hardback book featuring the iconic 'roses' cover art. All of the audio has been fully remastered from the original master tapes by Jon Astley and the 5.1 mixed by long-time Mansun collaborator P-Dub. The first CD contains the original album, the second is packed with previously unreleased demos, rarities and outtakes from the Mansun archive, and the third features BBC Radio 1 session tracks from '95 and '96 that have not been available since they were on air. The DVD boasts the album's first ever 5.1 surround sound mix (DTS 96/24 5.1 and Dolby Digital AC3 5.1), a hi-resolution stereo audio (24bit/48kHz Linear PCM) and 8 original promotional videos. The 72-page hardback book includes newly unearthed photos, extracts from Paul Draper's formative notebook documenting the early beginnings of AOTGL, previously unreleased original artwork, a foreword penned by Draper, in depth sleeve notes by accomplished journalist Paul Stokes, and plenty of newly unearthed treasures.
The album has been fully overhauled for a gloriously deluxe reissue package remastered from the original multi-tracks by Jon Astley and with the band and Paul’s longtime studio collaborator PDub creating the 5.1 remix. The CDs of extra material include previously unheard demo recordings, studio outtakes and long unheard BBC sessions recorded prior to the album’s release. This reissue campaign also sees the record remastered for vinyl for the first time since its original release.
